And the Planet K mural goes up!

The contentious Planet K mural has been almost completely installed on the old Trading Post building on 71. As artist Kerry Awn puts the finishing touches to the mural Planet K owner Michael Kleinman claims he has given the City of Bee Cave the 5 days notice required by the recent court ruling. We await comments from City Hall.

2011-06-04 07:33:46 | MistyIt has nothing to do with the mural. It has everything to do with finding a way to keep the city clean. We do not want a head shop.

2011-06-04 07:37:09 | Misty - NOIt's not about the mural at all. It's about finding a way to protect our community and keep it a great place to live. We do not want a head shop.

2011-06-04 08:35:12 | howdy - NOBee Cave doesn't want a "druggies' store"/porn/S & M toy shop in our community. The fact that you are bullying your way in here says everything about you. You don't understand target marketing obviously. May your business fail quickly.

2011-06-04 08:39:40 | Zelda Auslander - ZeldaBeeCaveRegarding the mural, I have to admit it is very nicely done, especially if they cover the west side as well. Also, I am pretty sure it would have been painted directly on and covered the entire building if the city were not fighting it calling it a large sign. That leads us to the problem that remains for the city leadership, if this mural/sign is allowed to remain, then how can they retain the power to legislate the size and content of a sign, in a legal, non-discriminatory manner that is tasteful and appropriate and not opening pandora's box to a signs typical to S. Lamar, Burnet Rd, etc. ?!?! This City has worked very hard to legislate in a way that projects a somewhat upscale quality to our community to protect and enhance home values....I personally think that remains a good goal. It's not about money for Bee Cave Council or we'd allow the highest and best use (drive thru restaurants) for properties along our state roadways. If Planet K could eliminate the sale of bath salts, hallucinogens, drug paraphernalia, and maybe hide or eliminate the sex toys...and present merchandise in a professional manner, then I suppose there wouldn't be much to oppose....they'd be a gift shop allowable in the Town Center zoning district.

2011-06-04 10:18:30 | MaryBy having that ugly sign for Paul out front the owner of the store is showing how little regard he has for the way our city looks. What will he decide to place there next?
Also, I thought political signs could only be on display during an election cycle. Is this sign illegal?

2011-06-04 11:02:45 | Heather - WRONG community for this type of business! As a mother of a young son in this community, I am disgusted that Planet K is trying to come to Bee Cave. We recently relocated to Bee Cave from Dallas (we grew up in Austin) because of the safe, upscale, family community in the area. The target audience for a store like this is not in Bee Cave, across from the Hill Country Galleria. The owner of Planet K sounds like a real jerk, and I wouldn't be suprised if this is a total publicity stunt for his little company. Let's try to put a head shop in an upscale, family community... one that will cause all kinds of attention: "free publicity." I am sure the owner just HATES all the free press and media attention his establishment is receiving. I have lived in Austin a total of 24 years and have never in my 24 years heard the name Planet K more than in the last few months. Okay buddy, your 15 minutes of "fame" is over... now pack up and get out of here. Go back to South Austin where your business might actually stand a chance at being profitable. Hope you enjoyed the attention. Your mother must be so proud of you!

2011-06-04 11:33:27 | Joe Coleman - Looks Good KerryKerry Awn is an accomplished local artist, and has a history of producing art, from concert posters to, well, murals. His work is pleasing and well-done. So where's the beef?

2011-06-04 17:46:09 | Carol - Planet KObviously those who like the Planet K mural are new to the area. The Trading Post is part of the history of the area.
Those who want Planet K out here should move to another area.

2011-06-04 22:21:26 | alicialoo - Looks awesome!!The mural looks great! And everyone who doesn't want to shop there- then don't shop there and quit being so concerned about your fellow neighbors who do want to shop there, FREE ENTERPRISE! Planet K has a lot of great gifts for EVERYONE, and people are going to get their sex toys and tobacco pipes somewhere anyway so get over it.

2011-06-05 09:32:07 | pegasus6 - Planet KWhat's the matter with many of you? I have visited Planet K in Austin and bought cards, gag gifts, and a whole host of nice things that you cannot find anywhere else in Austin. I bet most of the people complaining about it have never stepped into a Planet K store and are just "jumping on the band wagon". If they sell "head" paraphernalia I either didn't notice it or didn't care about it, it was not what I went there for.
For all of those hate mongers out there - find a good cause, one that helps people and but your energy there. Stop whining and complaining about stupid stuff. This is a free country that supports free enterprise. If you don't like it I'm sure Iran, Cuba or other countries that reflect your attitude would welcome you.

2011-07-16 03:00:25 | come on - wowAre you so blind as to think that the wireless internet you are typing these comments on doesn't allow the same avenue or availability to products and services that your children are exposed to as a business that requires 18+ access?? Face it, your children have the opportunity to film, photograph, facebook, email, and buy online from their telephones. You are close enough to a metropolis that the side effects of social network and innovation will touch the most modest of households. Use the place as a stimulation point or teaching ground. Expose them before they expose themselves some other way. Blocking something from a chile or adolescent only heightens their curiosity. Come the fuck on. When they turn 16 or 18 or 21 6th st. is only 20 minutes away. They'll sneak out to this corrupt world.
They're planning it as you sleep complacent parent.
