State law weakens Bee Cave texting laws
The new Texas State anti texting laws has forced Bee Cave to weaken its Hands Free usage ordinance to allow texting while stopped in traffic.
Councilman Monty Parker's notes on Facebook explain the process:
"In 2015 COBC approved an ordinance for hand held devices. Recently, the State of Texas passed a state law addressing texting while driving which pre-empted the City ordinance. The new State law allows texting while stopped at a traffic light or stop sign, while the COBC ordinance only allowed texting while parked and not in the flow of traffic.
The City’s new ordinance is basically the same as the old one with the texting portion removed due to the State law which doesn’t allow municipalities to address texting in their own ordinances. The motion was approved unanimously."
