Mayoral contest for the first time in 14 years

Council Member Monty Parker has announced he plans to run for Mayor this May. Incumbent Mayor Caroline Murphy has confirmed her intention to stand for another two year term.

On his FaceBook Group Parker said:

"At the urging of many citizens, I have decided to run for Mayor of Bee Cave.

I intend for this to be a positive campaign focusing on the things we can do to make the City better, more transparent and more responsive to the desires and concerns of our citizens.

There is a lot to be proud of with our city. The Mayor we have had for the last 18 years has, in connection with 9 different City councils, charted a very prudent fiscal course leaving our city in excellent financial shape with a low tax rate and extensive financial reserves.

However, over those 18 years our City has changed. Our city has experienced explosive growth and many citizens feel that the city government has not been responsive to their concerns with such issues as growth and traffic as well as providing amenities that many citizens desire, but have thus far been unable to receive from our City, despite large budget surpluses.

Many citizens complain that city staff can be slow to respond or sometimes unhelpful, and while the Mayor does not directly supervise the city staff, attitudes begin at the top, and I will work to emphasize to all City employees the clear understanding that they work for the citizens and not vice versa. I will have an open-door policy and pledge to always be available to listen to citizens’ concerns and suggestions."

He also has the support of Kara King - "My friend, and fellow council member, Monty Parker, has made the following announcement. I ask you to please give him your support:"

Mayor Murphy has also gone on record to promise that she will not take any campaign contributions from local developers - a source of contention in prior elections.

Of the other two candidates up for re-election this time around, only Tom Matzen has announced he plans to stand again. Mayor Pro Tem Bill Goodwin has a history of leaving his application to stand to the last minute.
