SW Travis County OK's Groundwater District
South Western Travis County voters passed a vote to approve the creation of the new Southwestern Travis County Groundwater Conservation District this week - with a majority of almost 75%.
Voters in southwestern Travis County had the opportunity to help protect the water resources in our area by voting for confirmation of the Southwestern Travis County Groundwater Conservation District (SWTCGCD). The 2017 Texas Legislature passed an Enabling Act to establish the SWTCGCD, which includes the Cities of Bee Cave, Lakeway, the Hills of Lakeway, Briarcliff, a portion of West Lake Hills, and the unincorporated areas of SW Travis County; however, the final step was voter approval.
GCDs are the only entities that have the authority to manage and regulate groundwater under Texas Law. The confirmation of the SWTCGCD is an important issue for protecting our local water resources and is why the SWTCGCD has strong bipartisan support from State Senator Dawn Buckingham, State Representatives Paul Workman and Vikki Goodwin, County Judge Sarah Eckhardt, County Commissioner Gerald Daugherty, local mayors, and other elected officials. There will be no new taxes associated with funding the SWTCGCD and no regulation or metering of typical domestic or agricultural wells.
