Schools lost $150,000 in state money

Share

LTISD Deputy Superintendent Johnny Hill has reported that student absences during the last six weeks of the 2013 lost the district over $150,000 in state funding.

With the school year going on one more week than most other areas (in order to allow a full week for Thanksgiving - itself an attendance related decision) the debate will continue.

Superintendent Lancaster said “The rub with the calendar is, are the other schools we’re comparing ourselves to that ended earlier, did they have a week off for Thanksgiving?- You’ve got a law that says you’ve got to go to school for 180 days, and nobody goes for 180 days anymore … We’re already shaving three days off of the legally required school year, and there’s a limit to what we can shave off. Our community likes Thanksgiving.”
