Lake Travis High School’s orchestra director, Anna Macias, has been diligent in arranging for opportunities for the students to work with professional artists and composers most of her career. Anna Macias has served as the Director of Orchestras at Lake Travis High School since 1996. In the biggest concert of the year for the orchestra, Beto y los Fairlanes will be conducting a clinic with the students of Lake Travis High School, Lake Travis Middle School, and Hudson Bend Middle School to further refine the skills of the students and to expose them to professional musicians. This is invaluable for the students to see how what they are learning can translate to a professional performance and the value of fine arts to the community.
In addition to performing some of the band’s beloved tunes as well as holiday music, they will be joined by the LTISD's Orchestras, and featuring violinist, composer and vocalist, Javier Chaparro. Javier will also be joined by the Lake Travis Fiddlers in presenting a few of his compositions. As a special feature to the evening, the Lake Travis High School Orchestra will perform a world premier song by original Fairlane member Dr. John Mills.
Beto and the Fairlanes is Robert “Beto" Skiles' whimsical creation that started out as music for a Latin Jazz ballet named "El Perdido". However, when the ballet failed to materialize, Robert, along with some of his closest friends, recorded the "El Perdido" music in studio 1A at the University of Texas. Soon after that, Beto and The Fairlanes were featured on a live broadcast from KUT radio hosted by the local jazz DJ, Fred Bourque. The response was immediate! All of the radio station's phones lit up at once. At that moment, the band instantly created a fan base that continues to grow to this day, 40 years later!
Dr. John Mills is a composer, arranger and saxophonist who writes and performs across the full spectrum of musical genres in concert and in the recording studio. His works for strings include premieres for Solisticos de Santiago (Chile), string quartets that have reached the semifinals in the last two International Golden Hornet String Quartet Smackdown competitions, and orchestral arrangements for popular artists including Carmen Bradford, Rosanne Cash, David Byrne, Andrew Heller, Indigo Girls and Asleep at the Wheel.Very recently John was honored to perform with Paul Simon, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett at the Hurricane Harvey Benefit. Dr. Mills is a Professor of Jazz Studies at UT Austin's Butler School of Music.
Javier Chaparro, a long time friend of Robert's and an honorary Fairlane, is a native of Lima, Peru, and began his formal study of violin at the National Conservatory in Lima. He has been with the Sinfonica Nacional in Lima, the Fine Arts Theatre Orchestra in Mexico City, the Austin Symphony and currently holds the post of Concert Master for the Brazos Valley Symphony and The Backyard Symphony. As a guest artist he has performed solo and chamber music recitals in United States, South America, and Europe. Over the years he has built quite an eclectic musical career performing Latin, Jazz, Gypsy, Pop and Country Western music as a band leader and a sideman. Javier has been the featured artist in film and documentary soundtracks including The Alamo, Spy Kids, IMAX’s Ride Around the World, and Loaves and Fishes.
