BSW to open Sleep Lab

Share
Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Lakeway today announced that it will be opening a sleep laboratory to identify and treat all forms of sleep disorders.

The Sleep Lab, part of the Scott & White Sleep Institute accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, will be led by physicians specially trained in sleep disorders and pulmonary medicine.

According to the American Sleep Association, more than 50 million U.S. adults have a sleep disorder. Of those, about half suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, with short-term issues experienced by more than 30 percent of adults. Sleep disorders also are attributed to other issues, including snoring, unintentionally falling asleep, and falling asleep while driving.

“Sleep plays a vital role in so many areas of our health and general well-being, including physical health, mental health, quality of life and safety,” said Rajesh Babu, MD, pulmonologist at Baylor Scott & White – Lakeway. “When we don't get enough sleep, or quality sleep, we are putting ourselves at an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, heart failure, diabetes, depression, stroke and other serious health conditions.”

Sleep disorders treated at Baylor Scott & White – Lakeway’s Sleep Lab include:

Central sleep apnea
Snoring
Narcolepsy
Obstructive sleep apnea
Insomnia
Restless leg syndrome
Parasomnias

A patient’s primary care physician may recommend sleep studies for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Studies will be offered at the Sleep Lab at Baylor Scott & White– Lakeway, and, in some cases, an individual may need more than one. Services will include:

Ambulatory monitoring
CPAP titration
Day studies
Maintenance wakefulness testing
Multiple sleep latency testing
Nocturia studies
Polysomnography
Split night sleep study

“Our bodies need quality sleep to function properly, and sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea can cause us to be fatigued, irritable and even depressed,” said Christa Armstrong, Baylor Scott & White Health assistant director of clinic operations – pulmonary, gastroenterology, and neurology. “We are pleased to open the sleep lab to provide the highest level of comprehensive treatment for those suffering from these and other disorders.”
